Family Literacy Day

Literacy is much more than the ability to read and write.  Talking, rhyming, drawing, singing, and story-telling, are all important building blocks in a child’s life.

The theme for this year’s  Family Literacy Day is, “Take the Learning Journey” where families are inspired to learn through everyday activities. Simple activities, like the ones listed below, are easy for families to do together to ready a child for success in school and throughout life.

-  counting stop signs when driving

-  matching socks in a laundry basket

-  measuring ingredients for a recipe

-  picking out grocery items at the store

-  making a birthday card

All Albertans are encouraged to take part in Family Literacy Day events across the province.

The Centre for Family Literacy also has family literacy programs, services, information and resources forparents/families and literacy practitioners.

ABC Life Literacy Canada  has tip sheets, free resources, and a listing of national events all in support of Family Literacy Day.
